City Council Removes Disc Golf
Since the City Council decision to remove families, young people, and recreation from Bidwell Park I have had dozens of emails, phone calls, and visits. Many people have expressed a desire to pass a referendum, forcing the council to reconsider its decision.

Some councilors have expressed an interest in finding a new location for disc golf.  A city planner has suggested that just an environmental report for a new location could take 5 years.  Councilors Ann Schwab and Tom Nickell would not even accept a friendly amendment allowing disc golf to continue at Highway 32 until a new site was found.   They have killed disc golf in Chico.

A referendum to overturn this decision would require 100 volunteers to each gather 80 signatures of registered Chico voters during a 3 week period. If you are willing to be one of the 100 people needed to save disc golf please contact me.   A conversation regarding the possibility of a referendum will be ongoing at my blog.

Bidwell Junior High - Blast
Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD)
Chico Country Day School
75 golf discs were donated in May to three local youth organizations (2 schools and the recreation district) by the Outsiders and the Golden Valley Bank Community Foundation (photos of the discs and recipients above).

The discs were purchased from the Disc Golf Association at a discount, and were a combination of putters and drivers. 25 were donated to the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD), 25 to Bidwell Junior High's Blast program, and 25 to Chico Country Day School (elementary school).

Donating these discs is an inexpensive way to introduce young people to disc golf, and make it easier for these groups to involve more kids in the recreation. The discs will remain with the programs and used by different kids each year. Both schools already had homemade disc golf targets, and CARD holds Camp Chi-Da-Ca every year which is adjacent to the Sherwood Forest disc golf course.

We are still looking for donations to help continue this program. Please consider donating any amount to support disc golf, a lifelong recreation, being taught to our kids (see donation link above to make a donation).

Who Did It ?
Chico's City Council voted to remove disc golf entirely from its location in Bidwell Park.  The vote was 4-3 to remove disc golf.
disc golf were... Andy Holcombe, Mary Flynn, Tom Nickell, Ann Schwab

These councilors have received financial and other support for their political campaigns from the opponents of disc golf.
You may email all of the councilors and express your displeasure via a link on this page... Please be reasonable and polite.  It does nobody any good to treat these officials roughly.

Here is an email the City Council received today.

Dear Council Members, Shock...No other way to respond to the front page of the paper this morning.  What are you people thinking??   In this difficult financial time families, friends or just an individual want to spend time in the park enjoying a game of disc golf.    Now, this dysfunctional group seemingly more worried about the next vote rather than exercise, eliminated this fantastic opportunity. Shame on all of you.   If I could take a vote back I would, unfortunately now I have to live with it.
