| Disc golf in Upper Bidwell Park may be removed: Sign This Petition | |
| Disc golf has been played in Bidwell Park since the late 1980's. In 1994 the city purchased the highway 32 site from the Bureau of Land Management. In 1998 the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission, who governs the use of Bidwell Park, voted to allow disc golf to continue pending environmental studies. The Chico City Council funded the construction of 45 hole disc golf holes with $206,000, and the environmental studies were completed. In 2003 the "Friends of Bidwell Park", an environmental group, hired the Sacramento law offices of J. William Yeates to stop improvements at the disc golf site. The City Council transferred the money allotted for disc golf to the Bidwell Park Master Management Plan update. This restarted the entire environmental review process. In 2006 as part of the park plan update the Park Commission designated an 18 hole advanced and 18-hole beginner course as the preferred project for the highway 32 site. In 2007 the "Friends of Bidwell Park" hired the same law firm to force the environmental review and park planning process to remove disc golf. The City of Chico has now spent more than $600,000 revising plans and studies. During this time frame they have not allowed disc golf park users to make improvements to the site. Documents related to the history of disc golf in Upper Bidwell Park can be found on the Resources page (see here). The options now available for disc golf at this site are a 2 18-hole course, 1 18-hole, and 1-12 hole course, 1 18-hole course, or removal of disc golf. There is no reason to assume that disc golf will be allowed to continue in Bidwell Park. If you would like to continue playing disc golf in Upper Bidwell Park you should take the following steps. 1. Sign the petition below and provide and accurate email address so we can let you know when decisions are being made. 2. Email your Park Commissioners (email here) and City Councilors (email here) and respectfully ask them to keep the site open. 3. Write letters to the editor of our local paper to express your opinion (web page here). 4. Ask your friends and family to do the things above as well. |

| 105 | Garrison Francis | This park is the best park I have ever been in. This course is a great place to hang and be close to nature. To take out one of the very few course in the world is to take away the entire sport from a community because of its rarity.
| 106 | Rich WAgner | Disk golf should be reckognized by the city of Chico. We provide a one hole practice in the Childrens park but fail to continue the development of a full course. The upkeep is managable and sholuld not be the discouraging factor to create a nice course.

| 136 | Steve Narehood | Please keep this course and others in the ground.Thank You
| 137 | Suzette Simons | Disc Golf does not necessarily have a bad impact on trees. Ewing Disc Golf Course in Des Moines Iowa plays through the city's Children's Arboretum. It is a great way to play disc golf and learn about the many variety of trees and shrubs in the park.

| 175 | Jeff Kelly | Seems to me the "Friends" have fallen victim to the same thinking that lead to the vietnam war. The slippery slope fallacy. They see disc golf leading to a wasteland of dead trees and billboards. I see it as another great thing to do in Chico.
| 176 | Lindsey Stewart | If you really want to save the trees and their surrounding environment, you should help advocate a permanent course. That way, when the area is parcelled off for track housing, it will be protected from the suburbian hell that Chico is sure to become.
| 177 | Brian Crum | Think of it in terms of communal services. Providing more outlets for our youth can only increase there opportunities for success.
| 178 | Jim Aird | Disc golf at Bidwell Park is my biggest reason to use the park. Why can all parties work together to create solutions to reasonably accomodate preservationists and actual park users?
| 179 | Scott Schumann | The disc golf course in Chico represents a healthy alternative form of recreation which the city needs to support. The city should embrace it, as it adds to the diversity of recreation opportunities the community is known for.
| 180 | Jeff Moss | i belive that the disc golf course should not be rmoved. it is one of the great things to do in chico that is free. The park offers a great time in the outdoors and also offers an alternative to alcohol.Removal of the courese would be a shame and a loss.
| 181 | Anna Barrett | The greatest detriment to Bidwell Park is the arrival of luxury homes on the once-beautiful canyon ridge...disc golf should be the least of the city's concerns!
| 182 | Patrick Fowler | Disc golf is fun and an important asset to bidwell Park,
| 183 | Rory Nall | Disc Golf is a great game it allows people to get out and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Please keep the Disc Golf course open for future generations to enjoy!
| 184 | Rex Chan | Discgolf is a great sport for everybody, please let us enjoy discgolf now and also in the future.
| 185 | Robert Matson | For many of us college students who choose not to be a stereotype and try our best not to feed the "party town" attitude of Chico, disc golf is one of the only things left in this town for us to take part in. Please don't take that away from us.
| 186 | Katie Edmunson | Please save the Chico disk golf course, we need more recreational oppertunities in Chico!
| 187 | Matthew Frink | I no longer live in Chico, but when I did, I would frequent the Bidwell Disc Course. I have been to a number of courses and none are like the Chico course. The bluffs and the open area, just gorgeous. Chico needs a disc course.
| 188 | Darcie Ryan | " The community that Disc Golfs together, stays together" I believe that. This sport is unlike any other. Anyone can play. Regardless of age,sex or physical stature. Alone, or in a group, Disc Golf is for everyone. Please dont remove Disc Golf from Chico
| 189 | Nikki Scott | These courses have inspired me to start a disc golf program at the Boys and Girls Club teaching young children the facination of playing this sport. Lets keep passing the torch!
| 190 | Nate Ogden | If the course is shut down people will continue to find places to play. Might as well just keep one designated area instead of having a bunch of unofficial places throughout the park
| 191 | William Aaron Porter | This is a great family activity that should not be destroyed by a few disgrunts!
| 192 | Bryn Lockhart | If frisbee golf in Chico is taken away from me, I will cry.
| 193 | Jonathan | Disc golf is beautiful way to see the dry hills around Chico. The view is fantastic, the people are nice, most keep the area clean, & I can take my family and pets out for a walk. Removal would destroy a greatly appreciated part of Chico's beauty.
| 194 | Niklos Weber, DVM | Disc golf exposes people to nature and the environment who would potentially not otherwise be so exposed.
| 195 | Pete Carr | Disc golf provides wonderfully safe yet challenging outdoor recreation with family and friends. For fitness, for fun, and for appreciating the beauty of Bidwell Park, the City of Chico needs to allow the disc golf courses to be improved and maintained.
| 196 | Dr. Matt Meuter | This course is one of the many things that makes Chico "Chico." Recreation and use of the park is the point of Bidwell Park. This is low impact and great fun for the whole family.
| 197 | Gary McCune | If the disc golf course is removed then you will be taking away a lot of good exercise for a lot of people. I love disc golf and it would be a travesty if the course was removed.
| 198 | Casey Frazer | (edited for content) I don't appreciate my recreational opportunities being attacked by the environmental community!
| 199 | Brady Lockhart | I go to the course 2 to 4 times a week, it's a great way to spend time with friends and family. Don't take it away from us!
| 200 | Tom Shotwell | BEST entertainment value in Chico! WHY remove it? Bidwell Park isn't big enough? Wake up, chico! Time for action!
| 201 | Chris Ocampo | Disk golf provides people with a great activity to enjoy with friends and family, taking the course away would be a tragedy
| 202 | Trevor Bohn | I play disc golf almost everyday and I think it is a great way to enjoy Bidwell. If they close down the course we all would have to drive to oroville and that is just way to much gas. SAVE THE COURSE!!!
| 203 | dennis wolfe | disc golf is a necessity in chico
| 204 | Waylon Henry | Disc golf has been a great way for me to escape for a couple hours and enjoy the outdoors. It is good, clean, innocent fun. My question is: "Why is the course being targeted when there are countless subdivisions being approved for construction?"
| 205 | Jake Johnson | Frolf needs to be save in bidwell park beacuse it is an awesome sport. The trees are not getting hurt.
| 206 | Michael Green | As a former Chico resident, I know Bidwell Park is fully capable of supporting multiple uses including disc golf. Sad to say, I'm not surprised to hear this is going on in Chico, where political correctness often trumps common sense.
| 207 | Joe Harris | Disc Golf is a sport which I believe is naturally played within the environment. If they believe this, they why do they have a problem with us playing at Bidwell. As long as we don't litter, the environment is safe.
| 208 | Nicholas Matthew Tom | DISC GOLF NEEDS TO BE SAVED!! ITS A GREAT OUTDOOR SPORT?ACTIVITY AND BRINGS HELLA FRIENDS AND NEW PEOPLE TOGETHER & IS MOST ENJOYABLE!! PORTECT & SAVE OUR COURSES NOW!!
| 209 | Annie Campbell | Yesterday I played disc golf for the first time and I had a lot of fun. I am very sad to hear that people are trying to close down the disc golf course. Please leave help the disc golf team keep it nice and let people like me learn what the sport is.
| 210 | Daniel Olivas | its not like were out shooting squirrels or poluting the rivers, were just playing frisbee
| 211 | Thomas Baker | This golf course is a fun place and schould not be closed, I toke a field trip to there along time ago and it was so much fun!!!!!!! SO DO NOT CLOSE THIS COOL DISC GOLF COURSE!!!!
| 212 | Leslie Ball | To all you corporate business guys, we're keeping this land for disc golf!
| 213 | Kevin Knoll | Save the course...it rules!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!
| 214 | Jen Stockton | Let the kids play!
| 215 | Paul Aguirre | My first experience playing disc golf was when I was a freshmman at Chico St., now being a senior I am so glad my old roommate opened up a whole new chapter in my sporting adventures, don't take that opportunity for others in the future to experience
| 216 | Kristopher Hencken | Save the course!!! I graduated from Chico State University back in 2002 and played disc golf alot over my five year stay in Chico. It was a great recreation asset to the students and community as a whole. It would definately be a tragic loss.
| 217 | Vicky | Disc golf is a great opporotunity for all ages to get out and be constructive without being dispruptive or destructive to the community.
| 218 | JoAnna Garner | Save the Course! It's beautiful, and a blast to play.
| 219 | Tim Frietas | As a former resident, the idea that a litter-free course would be removed because of impact on the Upper Park while hundreds of litter- and pollution-heavy cars are allowed to drive right to Bear Hole is just absurd. Disc golf's impact is MINIMAL, D o fP
| 220 | Chris Place | the land used to be grazed by cattle-they were run off. now, its used for a recreational sport (disc golf)- they're trying to run us off. who will they go after next?
| 221 | Adrian Palenchar | What good would the land the course is on be if no one used it? It's there, it's beautiful, so we might as well enjoy it with minimal amounts of damage rather than admire it from afar.
| 222 | Ryan Van Fleet | As a college student, I can barely afford any sort of recreation other than Disc Golf. It provides a fun/exercising use of the beauty that is Upper Bidwell. The positive impact on our community far outweighs the nominal bit of environmental damage caused.
| 223 | Alex "The Battle Axe" | What would we do if the golf course were gone? nothing. We'd probably start up another lame band or spend lots more money on gas going to the course in Oroville. Can't we all just get along?
| 224 | Kevin | PLEASE do not take away the Chico Disc course! Can you not see how much joy it brings to us and how much effort we have been putting into saving it? We care about the environment too! Please dont let the few people ruin it for us. Thank you! Kevin
| 225 | Bill Spencer | The traffic issues are a clear sign that the people of chico have spoken. They WANT to play disc golf. The irony is that, because so many people play, we may loose our course. FIND ANOTHER SOLUTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF CHICO. Outdoor living MUST prevail.
| 226 | Ben Blythe | If Bidwell isn't the right place, lets find a new place and the city should help.
| 227 | Keith Hayden | If disc golfing is wrong, then i don't want to be right baby.
| 228 | William Alvarez | Disc golf is a great addition to the park. It would be huge to loose it. The park is for everyone to use, and everyone to share.
| 229 | Casey Cagle | I have enjoyed Bidwell Park for years and while I do not play disc golf I completely support those who do. It seems that horseback riding (which I also support) causes far more damage. The park is large enough for everyone.
| 230 | Robert Carroll | My 8 year old daughter cherishes the time she can spend with me throwing discs, hiking, appreciating flora and fauna, and just being together on the long course(as do I). Please let us keep our special times together at this beautiful location. Thank you.
| 231 | Shane Hilton | I started playing disc golf summer '04 and it gives me exercise, competition, a beautiful view and so much more.
| 232 | Chris Fosen | I'm saddened that the Friends of Bidwell Park is so opposed to an environmentally harmless sport that brings friends and family together to enjoy the beauty of nature--in a part of the park that is isolated from other, more popular areas.
| 233 | Brian Kreb | I support the disc golf course 100%. I have worked in the environmental field for five years and think that the environmental damage is minimal compared to the benefit of its users.
| 234 | Ron Cremo | I support disc golf in chico and in bidwell park.
| 235 | Shad Butler | Please support disc golf and give current and future generations a place to enjoy a safe and healthy sport.
| 236 | Troy Stansbury | Disc golf is one of the only free events available in Chico and supports students and locals to go outside and enjoy nature. I have never seen a cleaner course around. Country Club golf courses aren't as clean as the Chico disc golf course.
| 237 | Deana Sweeney | Disc golf is a great outdoor activity.
| 238 | Troy Franzen | Environmental impact? If that's the case we need to get rid of all the deer that make tracks up there too. Let's get real.
| 239 | Tom Addison - Registered Voter - City of Chico | Annie Bidwell did not give us the park to lock up and preserve! She gave it to the people of Chico to enjoy......to use....to get outside...........to stay healty!
| 240 | Rick Leis | A small group of enviro-extremists should not be allowed to hold the community of Chico hostage. Their radical ideology must not be the final arbiter over outdoor recreation opportunities in Bidwell Park. It is a park, let the people of Chico use it!!!
| 241 | dave jones | disc golf is a fun, inexpensive, and a great way to get out and walk in the forest, without being an imposition on the surrounding environment.
| 242 | Michael Randazzo | Save Disc Golf!
| 243 | Steve Reiner | I can understand need to reduce the environmental impact humans have in Bidwell Park. But closing the course will not relieve the problem. The city can, and should, accomodate both recreational and envirnmental goals by allowing the course to remain.
| 244 | Jud Sheffield | Don't take our course!
| 245 | Scott Polson | I don't know where I'd be without disc golf...
| 246 | Peter DiFalco | Of any course I've ever played, the Bidwell course remains my favorite for its challenge and beauty. I return to Chico several times a year to play and I believe it should be preserved as a crown jewel of the Bidwell park treasure.
| 247 | Brian Ray | There's enough park in Bidwell Park to accomodate all manner of recreation, disc golf not the least of which. Limiting park activities to those that leave each blade of grass unbent, each clearing quieter than a library, strikes me as extreme.
| 248 | calvin coseo | |
| 249 | Spencer Combs | FROLF rules!! Please leave the course for the many people that use it!
| 250 | Lance Brogden | I/We have worked over five years to make this happen. Do not take away opportunity for kids!
| 251 | Shane Bracken | Please don't destroy one of the few things left to do in Chico that doesn't involve alcohol.

| 260 | Autumn McIntosh | Keep the course
| 261 | Brad Lund | Keep the disc golf course incurrent location and look for ways to better manage trash and debries left behind by golfers. Trash cans at the sight would be appropriate for the park to provide. In addtion plans to keep the hwy 32 course and create a new
| 262 | Tyler "T" Wilson | We must support healthy and enjoyable recreation in Chico! Save the ol' disc golf course!
